The inauguration of the Igbo-Etiti Special Task Force, took place on the 20th of October 2022, at the council headquarters in Ogbede.
The team who had been trained before the inauguration were also equipped with vehicles, tow trucks, and motorcycles, in line with their terms of reference.
The move is aimed at maintaining law and order, fostering the ease of doing business, and in the same vein, a means of empowerment, as the youths are being positioned for salaries.
While addressing the people during the inauguration, the council Chairman Hon. Ikenna Nwodo assured: “we want to make Igbo-Etiti a home, we want to curtail the rate of extortion by touts, extorting money from trailers and other goods carrier motors within our local government”.
While applauding the efforts of the council chairman, Hon. Charles Ugwu, the SPA to the local government chairman on Lands and Urban Development, who is also the coordinator of the task force, emphasized the duties and importance of the task force.
He said: “we will deploy our members and all available resources to boost the security within the local government and its borders, as well as to conduct market, constructions, road supervision, and patrols within the area.
The Chief Security Officer of the council area, Mr. Emmanuel, had this to say:
”the inauguration is seen to draw national attention and will test and showcase Enugu’s culture of security and unity in maintaining law and order”.
The team’s terms of reference include:
To maintain the free flow of traffic in all motorways in Igbo-Etiti LGA.
To be present and around the major market centers in the council area on the various market days or other days to maintain vehicular traffic and order in the general public interest and safety.
To guide and maintain the free flow of human and vehicular traffic at all major events of the LGA.
To caution and guide motorists and other alternative means of transport at market centers and roads in Igbo-Etiti to park off the road in the interest of other road users and the general public.
Ensure that all commercial drivers including cyclists conduct themselves to pull over, stop or enter their designated parks or bus stops at all times to ensure orderliness and traffic maintenance in carrying out their business within the council area.
To apply fines applicable to defaulters as contained in the Enugu State Ministry of transport traffic law applicable at present.
To assist the office of the Town Planning Department in Igbo-Etiti to identify persons developing structures/property in Igbo-Etiti without obtaining necessary permits/approvals.
To control the manner of placement or installation of signage (billboards) in Igbo-Etiti not to cause obstruction on all motorways and parks in the council area.
To enforce the Igbo-Etiti LGA Bye-law on the prohibition of open defecation and other related offenses, among many others.
