In a bold step toward improved sanitation, Dr. Eric Odo, Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, pledged that the LGA will achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by June 2025. The announcement came during a meeting with Mrs. Rebecca Bolatito Gabriel, UNICEF WASH Specialist from the Enugu Field Office.
Key Sanitation Strategies
Dr. Odo disclosed plans to establish a task force to ensure all homes, schools, churches, and markets have proper toilet and handwashing facilities. To enforce compliance, a mobile court will be set up to try those without functional toilets. Indigent households will receive government support to build sanitation facilities.

“The Igbo-Etiti Local Government under me is ready and very committed to attaining the ODF status by June 2025.”

Community Involvement at the Core
The council chairman highlighted efforts to involve religious leaders, urging them to ensure that all places of worship have functional sanitation facilities. He also mandated market committees to provide decent toilet facilities for traders, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach to open defecation in markets.

Partnerships for Water and Hygiene
On water accessibility, Dr. Odo said the LGA is working with the State Ministry of Water Resources and ENRUWASA to rehabilitate non-functional boreholes in communities like Ukehe, Umuna, Ozalla, and Ohebe-Dim. He also appealed to UNICEF for support in providing water to complement sanitation efforts.
Mrs. Rebecca Bolatito Gabriel praised the council’s determination, describing the ODF goal as commendable. She assured that UNICEF would support the LGA’s WASH initiatives, emphasizing Enugu State as a priority region for the agency.
