The Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Dr. Eric Odo, has inaugurated a committee dedicated to eradicating domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence (GBV) in the area.

A Commitment to Ending Gender-Based Violence

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Monday in Ogbede, Dr. Odo stated that the initiative is a crucial step towards tackling the menace of GBV. He charged the committee with ensuring the complete eradication of these harmful practices in the local government.

He urged the committee, chaired by the council’s Vice Chairman, Barr. Chinasa Nwabufo, to propose policies that would help his administration fight gender-based violence, including rape and defilement, to a standstill.

A Carefully Selected Team for a Critical Task

Dr. Odo emphasized that the committee members were carefully chosen based on their competence and capacity. He tasked them with identifying victims of GBV and ensuring they receive adequate support. “Our administration is fully committed to combating gender-based violence, which affects both men and women,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of gathering reliable data on GBV victims to facilitate their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

“We will encourage victims of gender-based violence to speak out, and any reported case will be handled decisively.”

Holding Perpetrators Accountable

The council chairman stressed that perpetrators of gender-based violence must be apprehended and prosecuted to deter future offenses.

“The current administration under my leadership is determined to eradicate this violence.

“Your role as a committee is to help this government achieve that goal in the shortest possible time.

“As a responsible government, we cannot stand by helplessly and watch Igbo-Etiti indigenes and residents—young or old, male or female—suffer abuse and molestation.

“Our administration is 100% ready to implement any policy the committee recommends to curb the menace of GBV in Igbo-Etiti.

“Beyond policy recommendations, the committee is also expected to propose appropriate punishments for offenders.

“We will provide financial and logistical support to ensure the success of this initiative. If it requires budgetary allocation, we will make it happen,” Dr. Eric Odo assured.

Committee Pledges Immediate Action

Responding on behalf of the committee, Chairperson Barr. Chinasa Nwabufo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead such an important initiative. She assured the council that the committee would hit the ground running and deliver on its mandate.

She reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to working tirelessly and effectively to ensure that gender-based violence is eliminated in Igbo-Etiti.
