The Igbo-Etiti Local Government has officially banned masquerades in the area from carrying weapons, including canes, and has vowed to take action against any masquerade violating the directive.

The Council Chairman’s Stand on Masquerade Violence

Speaking at the Monthly Holy Mass held at the Council Headquarters in Ogbede, the Igbo-Etiti Local Government Chairman, Dr. Eric Odo, emphasized the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property. He stated:

“The government will not sit idly by while masquerades—whether Odoh, Akatakpa, or Omabe—continue to harass our people, particularly women and girls. We are taking strict measures to put an end to these violent acts.”

Religious Leaders Call for Government Action

During the Mass, Rev. Fr. Valentine Mbah, the priest in charge of St. Agnes Parish, condemned the actions of masquerades, stating that they have deviated from cultural values and have become a public nuisance. He urged the government to stop them from blocking public roads and disrupting daily life.

Commitment to a Safer Community

The Igbo-Etiti Local Government reassures residents of its dedication to public safety and cultural preservation without violence. The fight against domestic and gender-based violence requires collective effort, and the council calls on all stakeholders to support this initiative for the betterment of the community.
